APS is the first course in the Leadership Development for Sergeants or First-Line Supervisors. Students are expected to complete all reading and writing assignments and to actively participate in practical-based exercises designed to develop or enhance their supervisory abilities. Students can expect assignments that will require them to perform activities during hours outside the normal classroom times. The learning outcomes for this course will be for students to apply situational leadership and demonstrate an understanding of constitutional and administrative law, emotional and social intelligence, change, ethical decision-making, problem-solving, emotional survival, and public speaking in their role as a supervisor. Students must be capable of moderate physical activity; therefore, students on light or restricted duty are not eligible to attend. An agency Class A uniform (business suit and tie if not assigned to uniform duties) will be required to dress on certain course dates. Due to demand, Corporals and persons on promotional lists are not eligible to attend.
IMPORTANT: Agencies must complete a Personnel Change Request (found under the “Forms” section in LETRS) to ensure the attending officer’s current rank is accurately listed. If an officer with a qualifying rank is denied enrollment due to the reason “rank does not meet requirements,” the officer may re-register once the rank information has been corrected. However, please note that the officer’s place in line will be moved based on the new registration date and time. Emailed applications will not be accepted.
